Rules for High School Wrestling?
Okay, I’m a photographer for my High School’s yearbook and I’ve been hired to take photos for our Valentine’s Day wrestling tournament. I’ve been to wrestling matches before and I like watching them. I”d like to know what I’m seeing. How are points scored in wrestling? What are some BASIC rules for wrestling?
Match points are scored: 2 for takedown, one for escape, nearfalls are 2 or 3 depending on time. Team points: 3 for a decision, 4 for major decision (8-14 point differential), 5 for a technical fall (15+), 6 for a pin, injury, or DQ. I have actually seen team points taken away for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Matches are run on for two minutes each period. First period starts with both wrestlers in neutral position. After one period, one side will choose a position or defer until third period.
