Basic Fundamentals of Wrestling
Rules in wrestling are different for each style, but the basic fundamentals are the same. The most common style of wrestling is folk style and what you will see in most schools and colleges.
The basic wrestling skills include:
Positioning – Without a good stance and starting position, a wrestler will not be able to defend his position properly.
Learning to keep your knees slightly bent and your head up and back straight is important to having a stable position on the mat.
Keep your weight balanced by keeping your feet about shoulder width apart, your hands outstretched while keeping your elbows in close to your body.
When you attempt to execute a takedown, be sure your position does not give away your intentions.
Movement – Each time you move, be sure you are thinking about preventing yourself from being vulnerable to an attack. Always change it up when you move, don’t become predictable.
Any time you are moving around the mat, you must be quick and take short steps.
Penetration – When you get set up to go for a takedown, never back up before you execute your menouver. Your hands should be the first to move in because you can move your hands quicker than your body. Try not to blink when going for a takedown, it just takes a split second for a move to be reversed.
Tie-Ups – Most beginner wrestlers concentrate on under-hooking their arms to gain control of their opponent. Although you can gain control of your opponent this way, it is not the best move in tie-ups.
You need to begin to focus on developing a technique that will allow you to get control of your opponents head.
Defense – A well rounded wrestler will know how to defend attacks as well as execute them. Your best defense is to avoid a tie-up and try not to give your opponent much space to move.
Be quick and steady on your feet to avoid an attack to your legs. Learn to sprawl and use your weight to defend an attempted takedown.
The best way to become a good wrestler is to practice. Learn how to defend different moves and holds and get really good at executing takedowns.
It only takes a few solid techniques to be able to win, you don’t have to learn every wrestling move to be a good wrestler. Get the fundamentals down and pick a few of your favortie moves to learn, and learn them well. In no time you’ll be winning matches! It just takes practice, dedication and determination.
